That’s most of what I saw that is. I spent most my time working in the media room this year and missed all the panels. I even missed the Firefly LARP and the dance, but I did manage to get to run a GURPS game for 4 hours and make the late night parties. I am particularly broke this year so I only made two or so cursory runs through the dealers room and didn’t see anything I couldn’t live without. I would say our quality of vendors has gone up a tad as has the quality of the fan movies we got to show this year. Everyone wanted to see “The Hunt for Gollum”. It’s a fan made movie but from looking at it, you’d think they rented Peter Jackson and New Zealand to shoot it. It was phenomenal! The acting looked professional, the locations were breathtaking, the costumes looked were just wow. My only complaint would be they could have given the female romantic lead a nose job, but I’m picky about noses. I’m sorry, when she came on camera, all I could do was look at her amazing white nose sticking out like a unicorn horn. Can’t they air brush that stuff now days? Lots of good action, fine killing of orks and well, lots of nose. lol

I did this year get a bit of a chance to see much of the costumes before the contest. I admit I ADD’d out of the improv fan comedy light bulb joke session and didn’t see the actual cosplay, but I did get a chance to see a few of the players standing out in the hall and this year’s selection was very good. I did run that GURPS game in one of the board rooms. It did turn out very well and they did give me a lot of good RP, I don’t think we had as much action as I wanted. I still have the characters and I may run a continuation of the game next year as per request. By then, I will have my rules down better and I won’t be looking stuff up as much. GURPS is a very easy system and I can fudge a lot if I have to. lol The system lacks a good ship battle system so what I did was played the ships like they were battletech mecs with lots of guns and armor and just described movement. It was fairly easy. Next time I may bring the hex grid and get serious on ships battles. That was the best part of the game. I do need mini ships for this don’t I. hmm.

Parties. Lots of parties. I lent my room out for the Wholigans Dr. Who party both nights. I think we had most the alcohal on the floor this time around. Our party could have had a few more signs, but we did have a OMG amount of beer and other things. We even got one of my gamer friends completely smashed who doens’t usually do that sort of thing as he repeatedly told us over and over again. lol We had to help him back to his room, gawd he was gone. lol I think the highlight of our party was the “Empress Dalek” costume. I’ve got a bunch of pictures of that and as usual, pictures pending. Next year, we need to top that guy who brought the cello, maybe a whole chamber orchestra lol.

Busy week ahead

Fortunately most the ApolloCon movie stuff is done. We’ve got the schedule done, most the staff set up and ready to go, and the flyers are all up on the website. I am aslo going to run a game on Saturday afternoon/evening. It’s up on the gaming schedule under the title “Velasco”. I have room for 6 players, if you are interested, it will be Steampunk/Western alt universe Texas in 1836. I’m a little nervous about it, but I’ve had a bunch of sessions down with GURPS now in the past few months and I feel much more ready about running games than I had in the past with total strangers. It should be fun, at least I hope so. I have nothing for prizes, but there will be MIB’s there, maybe I can wrangle something out of them. lol! I just need to get off my butt in the next few days and polish up the character sheets and stuff and we are ready to roll. I had them put me down as 18+ mature, but in reality, I am being a mean GM and I don’t want to fool with munckins. Personally I do like kids, but I really want to swallow that task when I feel more ready for it.

I got the rest of the week filled with laundry, and cleaning, maybe a bit of maintainance, and family diplomacy to work out. I hope to get at least a little sleep before the con, but that doesn’t look likely. I certainly am not getting sleep while I’m there. My room will be taken over by the Space City Timelords for parties on Friday and Saturday night. Gawdz, what have I gotten myself into?

Amtgard Wetlands Coronation 2009, et. al.

The Kingdom of the Wetlands has a new King. Kane now is king and from the looks of it, I think he will do very well.
He’s well organized and a very good RPer. He’s already started a cool thread of RP and I’m looking forward to messing with him and the reign. (Sorry, my paladin persona would never let an oppressive Fascist reign get away with taking over the kingdom so easily.) Looks like there will be a big Steampunk element to this reign and I’m really looking forward to this.
I am adopting a couple of squires who belong to Sir Horus. He’s a friend of mine who’s currently now working as a truck driver and is out of state. That makes it hard on his squires so, I’ll help them out a little.
The event was actually smaller than I had hoped. The politics I mentioned earlier took it’s toll unfortunately. I daytripped it so I got there around 14:30 Saturday afternoon. I think I missed the only significant class battle. Oh well, I got to hang out with my friends. I haven’t done that in a very long time and it was good to see them all.

All my Elissa volunteering has kept me away from Amtgard for a long time and I needed to see them. Currently, there is another overnight going on this next weekend. However, I haven’t heard back from them. I think I’ll just call them tomorrow and see what’s up with that. It will be a Friday over night. It’s hard for me to get to those, but I’ll make my best effort. I know, I know, I missed Plankowners. Yea, it’s the biggest fundraiser of the year. Sorry. I’ll really try to make it next year. I promise. See, it’s recorded now.

ApolloCon will be happening at the end of the month on June 26-28, 2009. Snicker and I are doing the Media room. I’ve sent them my stuff, but I’ve not seen it up yet. Here’s the flyer for the Iron Director Contest. It promises to be a lot of fun, I hope we get some good participation this year.

That would be this little blog that I’ve neglected for the past day or two. It’s been a weird couple of days. I just came back from the latest ApolloCon con-com meeting and things are gettin’ to the wire. Me and a couple of friends are running the Media room and well, we have a few fan movies to throw around. Afterwords, I had dinner with one of my Doctor Who friends and I’m thinking of putting together a room party. I need to now get the ball rolling on that one and inspire a few people to get involved. ApolloCon needs fresh blood. I want to recruit some more media savvy help too. It’s worth it. I may add a few things here to this blog about the Contest we are running. As for the past few years, we’ve run a movie making contest called the Iron Director Contest. Essentially, the rules are you must make a movie at the con and present it at the deadline for fun and prizes. I’ll set up a link to the flyer tonight after I upload it. It states the rules and this year’s theme is Movie Monsters. Your movie must involve a large Japanese style Monster and be completely filmed and produced on site at the convention. It will be a blast. We’ve had all sorts of creative cool stuff the past couple of years. It is always worth a look-see.
