simple, just use rechargeable batteries

and really if your just using it to maneuver in port, you wouldn't need much more then an that between charging cycles.

obviously you would want a generator that /could/ run your motor if you got into a pinch but a wind/solar generator should be sufficient to charge your battery packs between uses, that way you wouldn't have to charge off the grid at dock..... if you got a large enough solar array it shouldn't take you more then 4 days of high noon sun to charge 1 hrs worth of propulsion....

have they came out with solar panels sewn into sails yet? on and what about wave action generators?

ok, i do got it!
(warning totally ridiculous theory here, that is extreemly bulky and expensive but fun)

ok units of 200 D-Cells wired in series to make 240VDC,
which gives you 12000 mAh, wire 10 of those in parallel to get 120 Ah (which will give you approx one hr of propulsion from the 35hp model)

multiply that set up as much as you want/can fit.... if you get a bad cell you can just replace it from any radio shack :-)

i like them ;-)

now to find large enough Lithium Ion batteries to run it
240 V pulling a hair over 108amps for the 35HP model.... that is /a lot/ of power, totally doable though... i wonder how much it would cost?

I was bouncing ideas off of Jeebus on this about the electric motor w/generator idea. There is plenty of room down there for such a thing and there are kits out there for putting in an electric motor you can order designed for this. If I add on a wind turbine as well, that may work out perfectly.

Yank out that heavy smoke machine and you can reduce your draft a bit ;-)

Although maneuvering in port can be a /little/ tricky on sail power alone........ could get a small outboard, not enough to go fast just enough power for maneuvering in close quarters. or you can line the deck w/ oar locks and man them with a about 10-12 ppl to pull them ;-)

I def think another diesel would be a bad thing if you can possibly avoid it. though if you do go electric might be a good idea to have a back up dino fuel (bio-diesel or propane maybe) generator, if you have the room that is.

for that matter a gen would be usefull if you go Engine-less, you want to be able to play on your computer, and run your a/c when dock power goes out (not that that /ever/ happens right?).

well what ever you deside good luck!
