Adventures in Tethering

Ok, so this weekend I managed to get my Sprint HTC Hero to tether. I figure if they have the software built in to the OS, it must be ok to use it. Right? I hope so. It turns out the phone gets higher transfer rates than my Sierra Wireless Sprint Air Card. The dedicated air card is old, I just had to change out its lithium battery, but it still works so I’ve been reluctant to upgrade it. I’m like that with tech, mostly because I’m on a budget while I pay of stuff. I am also on a contract with Sprint on that air card so I can’t do anything but use it until that contract is out. So I’ll use that card for a few more months. The only real downfall to tethering to the phone is the fact if I get a call, I’m off the internet. So, just call me on Skype, if I have the phone un-tethered, it will transfer anyway to the phone. If I am abusing my phone in a tethering way, it will go to Skype where I can answer it and stay online.

That brings me to another thing. Fring, the mobile multi-chat/voice app that worked on my phone that until a few days ago, used to do Skype. I loved this service, it really allowed me to make phone calls while Skype is too snootie to let it’s own app work on stuff other than Verizon, Fring happily would oblige. Now Fring is in the middle of some sort of childish tiff with Skype, so I downloaded Nimbuzz. Well… Fring really does indeed have a beef with Skype in that now Nimbuzz seems to be a victim of Skype’s non-admitted wrath.

Skype, stop trying to please the big cell phone providers. Just relax that sphincter and let everyone download your app or use your service. It’s better not to piss off your users. You don’t want to wind up like the record companies.

This wasn’t even the largest of my coworker’s harvest this week. We’ve had a lot of rain and warm days and her plant has had a lot of opportunity to grow.

I read a lot of blogs, especially history blogs here in Houston. I don’t remember which one I found the reference for this from but I did download it from the library. This is a Houston City Directory published in 1866, a year after the war finally ended. The ads are fun enough of a read, but the most interesting part is the account of the first 30 years or so of Houston from its founding in 1836 to the then present day in 1866.

Ok, in here in Houston you can’t watch the news at night without getting an update on the Great Corpse Flower at the Museum of Natural Science. They have a webcam so you can watch this thing at your pleasure sit there. Unfortunately the cam seems to be slashdotted… But, there is a blog if you can’t get the cam to work.

I’m on the bus finally. They let us off early an the remnants of Alex are raining all over Texas. Which means flooding and probably no power on the island. I may need to rescue my laptop and camp out at Coffee Oasis.

Fortunately, has come and gone way down south of us. However, not far enough to not cause a little storm surge in the marina and enough to panic the marina staff into shutting down the power yesterday afternoon around 5pm or so. I fortunately had checked my batteries the day before because I had my AC on fan all day and there it was sucking power off the inverter for an hour. For whatever reason, the harbor master relented at around 10:30pm last night and turned the island power back on. However, there is no telling if he may at a whim, shut it off so I’ve pulled it out and let the fresh breeze from off the gulf blow in all night. I left everything shut off today. The surge is still around and the flood warnings won’t expire until tomorrow morning.

Ok, so I admit that I’m the last person on the planet to have seen any of Lost. Well, I’m in episode 2 and I don’t know if I really feel anything for these characters and the invisible monsters that are chasing them. Most the characters are pretty clueless and I’m just waiting for them to be eaten by a polar bear in the jungle one by one. Should I give it a chance?
