Ok, tried the rye coffee thing

It’s not half bad really. I think I added too much sweetner and not enough rye.
Maybe I was subconsciously being a wuss. Maybe the rye was not properly prepared for the task. But I did add a lot of rye. My guess is the rye was not the strong natural stuff that would have been grown on a anti-bellum farm so it may be hard to recreate the experience without a lot of careful effort. The drink was like a “white” coffee and not all that bad to drink. I need to go to the store tonight anyway, so I may drop in and get some chicory. I get the impression that in the coffee substitute wars of the 1860′s, chicory eventually won out. I think I even remember my grandmother drinking chicory coffee when I was a kid. From what I’ve read, it’s a little more bitter than normal coffee. We shall see.
