You don’t know a ship until you’ve crawled around in her bilge

Which was what I was doing today, under the engine room. It’s a tight crawl space, and the pipes down there leak a little. So, there I was, deep in the bowls of Elissa with a bucket and a sponge on the end of a stick sitting on the spine of the keel at the very very bottom of the ship cleaning her where she needs it most. No rats, just water, unless you count the 11 year old that was on the other side doing the same thing in the starboard side across from me. He was our official Bilge Rat for the day. A wonderful kid who truly had fun doing this thankless job.
The mizzen mast is stepped right there where I was. Under that mast somewhere is supposed to be a Greek 20 dacrama(sp?) coin and a 2005 Texas quarter. It’s an old tradition, the Foremast has an 1877 British Gold Sovereign under it, and the Main mast has an 1883 Silver Dollar. Elissa has some good bits of dirt down there, but if I look that good at 130, I’d have a lot to brag about.
